Synopsis

Hansruedi Scheller (1931-2007) was a Swiss graphic artist and signalling pioneer. From about 1967 he created lettering, painting and guidance systems for around 230 large buildings, especially in the cantons of Zurich and Thurgau, but also in the rest of Switzerland. His work has shaped community, sports and shopping malls, schoolhouses, hospitals, indoor pools, housing estates, car parks, barracks and conference hotels, often designed by renowned architectural firms. Scheller's graphic work helped to find and feel comfortable in the then novel large buildings. He thus shaped the beginnings of the discipline signaletics. Scheller's name and his contribution to graphic and construction history were forgotten. The discovery of his estate gave rise to this publication. It takes a new look at a time when large buildings became so complex that architecture creators could no longer do without graphic support. It thus illuminates a previously barely noticed aspect of late modern architecture. Scheller's interventions make their qualities, but also their problems visible. They also demonstrate that signaletics belong to this architecture and must not be overlooked when maintaining it. Hanruedi Scheller, who was also a successful orientation runner, summarized his great experience into few, rules valid to this day. Thomas Bruggisser, who did his teaching in Atelier Scheller, was able to reconstruct them, which also gives this publication the character of a textbook. Illustrated with Scheller's original photographs from the pioneering era of signaletics.
