Synopsis
This book provides an introductory treatment of the design methodology for undergraduate students in multiple disciplines. It introduces the principles of design, and discusses design tools and techniques from traditional and multidisciplinary perspectives and comprehensively explores the design engineering process. Innovation, creativity, design thinking, collaboration, communication, problem solving, and technical skills are increasingly being identified as key skills for practicing engineers in tackling today's complex design problems. Design Engineering Journey addresses the need for a design textbook that teaches these skills. It presents a broad multidisciplinary perspective to design that encourages students to be innovative and open to new ideas and concepts while also drawing on traditional design methods and strategies. For example, students are provided with design solutions inspired by nature as well as the arts to nurture their creative problem solving skills. This book provides an overview from establishing need to ideation of concepts and realization techniques and prototyping, presented in an engaging and visually appealing manner, incorporating multidisciplinary examples that aim to reinforce the student's evolving design knowledge.
The technical level of this book is kept at an introductory level so that freshman and sophomore students should be able to understand and solve a variety of design problems and come up with innovative concepts, and realize them through prototype and testing. This book also can serve as a reference text for senior capstone design projects, and the readers will find that the examples and scenarios presented are representative of problems faced by professional designers in engineering.

About the Author
Ramana M. Pidaparti earned his Ph.D. in aeronautics and astronautics from Purdue University, West Lafayette, Indiana. Dr. Pidaparti is now a professor and Distinguished Faculty Scholar in the College of Engineering at the University of Georgia. He was previously a faculty member at Virginia Commonwealth University and Purdue School of Engineering and Technology (IUPUI). He taught design and analysis courses emphasizing multidisciplinary designs and simulations, and encouraged students to participate in multidisciplinary design competitions. He won several design awards and presented papers at various conferences. He is a Fellow of ASME (American Society of Mechanical Engineers), Fellow of American Association for Advancement of Science (AAAS), Fellow of Royal Aeronautical Society, and Associate Fellow of AIAA (American Institute for Aeronautics and Astronautics). His current research interests include multidisciplinary design from Arts and Biomimicry, and bioinspired materials and structures, and computational mechanics and informatics.

This book deals with sustainable affordable housing in developing countries, providing the main results of the BECOMe research project of the Politecnico di Milano. Sustainable, affordable housing in developing countries is increasingly important for African and international stakeholders, with massive urbanization processes involving many countries consuming large territories and natural resources minus any strategy of sustainability and social equality and without consideration of the long-term effects on the environment and subsequent generations. While the issue of affordable housing requires approaches adapted to the many specific African contexts, the case of Somalia seems representative of a fragile context characterized by the uncertainty of the social, political, and economic situations and the lack of common shared legislative references and strategies. The book aims to provide knowledge and propose a methodological framework developed from this particular situation that can serve as a template. On the basis of this main objective, the book deals with approaches and problems related to the creation of sustainable housing ecosystems, activating and boosting local enterprises and stimulating foreign investors to revamp the national AEC sector and related manufacturing industries, models for modular settlements, and business models and assessment methodologies useful for evaluating a set of appropriate technological solutions.
