This textbook is written to thoroughly cover the topic of introductory chemistry in detail―with specific references to examples of topics in common or everyday life. It provides a major overview of topics typically found in first-year chemistry courses in the USA. The textbook is written in a conversational question-based format with a well-defined problem solving strategy and presented in a way to encourage readers to “think like a chemist” and to “think outside of the box.” Numerous examples are presented in every chapter to aid students and provide helpful self-learning tools. The topics are arranged throughout the textbook in a "traditional approach" to the subject with the primary audience being undergraduate students and advanced high school students of chemistry.

Michael Mosher currently holds the rank of Professor in the Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry at the University of Northern Colorado, having served as Chair in that Department earlier in his career. Trained as a synthetic organic chemist, Mosher has been very interested in teaching pedagogy in the general chemistry and organic chemistry curricula. He has been particularly interested in the use of applications as tools for understanding difficult concepts in chemistry. He has received numerous awards for teaching throughout his career including the Pratt-Heins Outstanding Teaching Award at the University of Nebraska at Kearney. He has over 50 publications in chemistry and brewing science and is the author of three textbooks in those fields.
Paul Kelter was most recently the inaugural Director of the Office of Teaching and Learning as well as Professor of Science education at North Dakota State University. An analytical chemist, Kelter was an international leader in chemistry education, having procured substantial funding for precollege and university teacher research, development, and summer programs. He has been honored with over 20 major educational awards, including Fellow in the Education Division of the American Association for the Advancement of Science, Board of Trustees Professor at Northern Illinois University, University of Illinois Distinguished Teacher / Scholar, University of Nebraska Academy of Distinguished Teachers member, and Distinguished teacher at the University of Wisconsin – Oshkosh. This textbook is written to thoroughly cover the topic of introductory chemistry in detail―with specific references to examples of topics in common or everyday life.
