The main focus of this book is on providing students, neurosurgery trainees, certified neurosurgeons and colleagues in neighbouring disciplines essential information on the evolution of the central nervous system (CNS) of craniata and homo. Therefore the book is divided in three parts: Part I is describing the evolution of CNS of craniata (starting 800 million of years ago). Part II is explaining in detail the exceptional position of the human encephalon. Part III is discussing maturity and immaturity of all parts of CNS of craniatas and the consequences concerning further development of brain structure and psychological functions. In all parts anatomical fundamentals are presented in the form of didactic and self-explanatory illustrations.

Wolfgang Seeger was Professor and Chairman of the Department of Neurosurgery at the Albert-Ludwigs-University of Freiburg (Germany) until he retired in 1997. His major interests were the anatomical basis of cranial neurosurgery and the resulting advances in microsurgical techniques. In both fields he trained co-workers and he was giving anatomical training lectures at numerous neurosurgical departments. The training activities have been supported by brain dissections and by the drawings of Wolfgang Seeger, and became working basis for the 24 books he published. After his retirement, he continued to give training lectures and especially to publish books.

Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. 1st Edition. Oversized hardcover, vii + 99 pages, NOT ex-library. Book is clean and bright throughout, with unmarked text, free of inscriptions and stamps, firmly bound. Issued without a dust jacket. -- This highly technical volume provides a comprehensive neuroanatomical map of the evolution of the central nervous system (CNS), tracing its development from early Craniata (vertebrates with skulls) to Homo sapiens. Written by the late Wolfgang Seeger, a world-renowned neurosurgeon, the work serves as a detailed atlas that bridges the gap between evolutionary biology and clinical neurosurgery. The book meticulously details the structural shifts in the brain and spinal cord across different species, focusing on how specific regions - like the cerebral cortex and brainstem - expanded or reorganised to support higher cognitive functions in humans. Unlike many evolutionary biology texts, this is written from a microsurgical perspective. Seeger uses his decades of experience in the operating theatre to explain why certain anatomical structures are shaped the way they are, providing "evolutionary logic" for modern human brain surgery. The book features intricate, hand-drawn-style anatomical diagrams which help surgeons and students visualise 3D spatial relationships. -- Wolfgang Seeger (1929-2018) was a pioneering German neurosurgeon and the long-time Director of the Neurosurgical Department at the University of Freiburg. He is considered one of the founding fathers of modern microsurgery. This 2019 book was published posthumously, serving as his final contribution to the field. It represents his lifelong fascination with how the "perfect" complexity of the human brain was built over millions of years of evolutionary trial and error. Seller Inventory # 013152
