Italian-born composer Luigi Boccherini (1743-1805), like Domenico Scarlatti before him, gravitated to the Iberian Peninsula at the invitation of the Spanish Court. Already famous in his teens as a virtuoso cellist, he enjoyed the patronage and admiration of the Spanish aristocracy. Boccherini is perhaps best known to guitarists through a number of string quintets, arranged by the composer in 1799 for guitar and string quartet at the request of the Marquis de Benavente, himself a guitarist. In 1787 he was appointed "Composer of his chamber" by Friedrich Wilhelm II of Prussia. He returned to Spain in 1797 but then lacked a patron and he died in poverty.
