Presentation of the editor
For the past ten years, Raphaël Zarka has collected photographs of skateboarders on works of public art published in magazines or on websites dedicated to skateboarding. In 74 images, the book brings together 48 sculptors and 66 skateboarders documented by 43 photographers around the world. It is a reflection on sculpture in the context of a more general questioning on the notion of public space and the "practices of spaces" of the inhabitants, close to the reflections of Michel de Certeau. "Passersby, art critics, history, judge works of art on aesthetic and conceptual criteria (it’s beautiful or interesting). The criteria of the skaters are above all mechanical: the interest of a sculpture is due to the variety of movements it suggests. More irreverent than vandal, this practice of the work of art underlines the explicit dynamism of a whole section of modern sculpture. On mostly abstract and geometric sculptures, of Cubo-futuristic or constructivist inspiration, the skateboarders make the idea of movement literally implemented by the artists effective. »Raphaël Zarka Ten images are missing from this collection, the sculptors having refused the reproduction of their works. The spaces dedicated to the corresponding images have voluntarily been left vacant. the article contains intentionally blank pages.
