L'aventure cistercienne débute en 1098, lorsque Robert de Molesme, Albéric et Etienne Harding, animés par la volonté d'un retour à la Règle de saint Benoît, fondent, en un lieu appelé "Cistels", leur "Novum Monasterium". Avec Bernard de Clairvaux, l'Ordre de Cîteaux multiplie ses fondations. Appréciés des pouvoirs religieux et politiques, grands organisateurs, ceux que l'on a appelés les "moines blancs" façonnent une théologie mystique originale, tout en ouvrant de nouvelles voies à l'art et à l'architecture. Aujourd'hui encore, les fils spirituels des fondateurs de l'Ordre, membres de lagrande famille cistercienne, continuent à en écrire l'histoire.
