Synopsis
Cette lettre au peintre Ferdinand Hodler exprime la fascination qu'exercent les toiles du grand artiste sur l'auteur, en particulier celles qu'Hodler a peintes de l'agonie de Valentine, son grand amour. C'est aussi un texte d'hommage à la femme : Valentine a joué un rôle crucial dans l'art de Hodler, c'est elle qui a su libérer sa peinture. Lorsqu'ils se rencontrent, Hodler est un peintre reconnu, sollicité, fêté, mais Valentine révèle en lui une énergie et une liberté exceptionnelles qui lui permettent d'entrer en contact avec son génie singulier. A l'occasion du centenaire de la mort du peintre, Daniel de Roulet imagine l'amour entre ces deux figures en jouant avec les archives. Le lecteur, à la suite de l'auteur, tombe amoureux du peintre, de sa maîtresse et de sa peinture.
