In an aircraft seat, a microwave, a mobile phone or a piece of clothing, we can transport complex technology to be of service wherever we need it. A well-designed product is usually the result of hundreds of carefully formed decisions regarding its functionality, our needs and lifestyles, as well as our emotional response to colour, texture and form. The stories behind today's top design icons are explored here through 50 smart designs. Clive Grinyer is Head of Product Design for Tag McLaren Audio and has been design leader for IDEO, Fitch and Samsung. He lectures at De Montfort University and Central St. Martins.
