Composé au milieu du XIe siècle de notre ère, la Naarajapaddhati est le plus ancien manuel rituel sivaïte (paddhati) produit au pays tamoul qui nous soit parvenu. Ce volume fournit une édition critique des 340 premiers vers de cet ouvrage inédit, qui détaillent les rites quotidiens obligatoires d’un acarya initié (dikita) dans la tradition du Saivasiddhanta. Il fournit des instructions précises sur la séquence d’exécution de tous les rites, depuis le réveil au petit matin jusqu’au coucher. L’auteur, Ramanatha, disciple d’un certain Naaraja (également connu sous le nom de Naesa), auquel il rend hommage et en l’honneur duquel l’ouvrage est nommé, mentionne qu’il réside dans un monastère (maha) située à l’est du temple de Siva Pupavanesvara, dans une ville non identifiée.

T. Ganesan worked as a Senior Researcher at the French Institute of Pondicherry from 1985 until his retirement in 2017 and continues to be affiliated with the IFP. He has published a detailed monograph, Two Saiva Teachers of the 16th Century: Nigamajnana I and His Disciple Nigamajnana II. Among his significant publications are the first critical edition of the Varuapaddhati along with the unpublished commentary of Nigamajnana II, and Sivajnanabodha with the Laghuika. He is also the co-editor of the first three volumes of the Sukmagama and is currently working on the critical edition of its fourth and final volume. S. A. S. Sarma joined the Pondicherry Centre of the Ecole française d’Extrême-Orient (EFEO) in 1989, where his profound interest in ritual literature led him to prepare critical editions of various Saiva ritual works. His notable publications include collaborative editions of the Pancavarataastava (IFP/EFEO, 2005), the Dhyanaratnavali (2012), and the first volume of Trilocanasiva’s commentary on the Somasambhupaddhati (in press). He is also known for his critical edition of the Kapilasrti (Torino, 2007), for his work with Jean-Luc Chevillard on the Digital-Tevaram (IFP/EFEO, 2007), and for articles on Kerala tantric rituals.
