Tortoise shell is a natural material highly appreciated for its lightness, flexibility and durability as well as for the beauty, transparency, and diversity of its designs. In Europe the Boulle marquetry technique was first used, and then in the 19th century the method of moulding tortoise shell made it possible to extend its use to bottles, eyeglass frames, combs, boxes, inkwells, jewelry, etc. The Tortoise shell presents the history of the tortoise shell, its characteristics and methods for working with it.
