Au-delà des drames de sa vie, son travail doit davantage à une exigence obsédante, à une farouche obstination, qu'à la misère ou à la folie. Vincent a peint en dix ans une œuvre immense. Soutenu par son frère Théo, il entretint avec lui une riche correspondance, révélatrice de sa conception de la vie et de sa vision de l'art.
