Synopsis

The glass processing industry is principally divided into two distinct parts: hollow glass items production and flat glass production manufacture. Bearing in mind current evolution in design, the needs of the new market and the objective of reducing manufacturing costs, glass manufacturers must obtain better control and knowledge of their production means and limits in order to respond quickly to new designer specifications. Given these facts, the introduction of numerical modelling is a very powerful means of solving complex glass forming problems, reducing trial and error. This text offers a discussion of these and related issues. It covers: challenges and opportunities associated with current and future trends in automobile glazing; future trends in hollow glass production; radiative heat transfer and its application in glass; a new method for solving radiative heat problems in glass; structural and stress relaxation in a glass slab; optimum tool geometry for flat glass pressing; inverse determination of material properties and residual stresses; and residual stress simulation in a glass/metal contact.
