Synopsis
" Je commence à savoir peindre. Il m'a fallu plus de cinquante ans de travail pour arriver à ce résultat, bien incomplet encore ", déclarait Pierre Auguste Renoir (1841-1919) en 1913. Cette même année, Guillaume Apollinaire faisait l'éloge de celui qu'il considérait comme " le plus grand peintre vivant ". Au début du XXe siècle, Renoir jouit d'un prestige incontesté sur la scène artistique. On salue la figure emblématique de l'impressionnisme des années 1870, mais aussi la jeunesse d'un maître capable de dépasser et de renouveler un mouvement de plus en plus largement accepté. Renoir invente un art qu'il veut classique et décoratif. Henri Matisse, Pablo Picasso, mais aussi Pierre Bonnard ou Maurice Denis professent leur admiration pour Renoir, et en particulier pour sa " dernière manière ", celle du tournant du XXe siècle. De grands amateurs de l'art moderne, tels Leo et Gertrude Stein, Albert Barnes, Louise et Walter Arensberg ou encore Paul Guillaume, le collectionnent aux côtés de Cézanne, Picasso ou Matisse. Accompagnant l'exposition, cet ouvrage revient sur ces années fécondes et invite à redécouvrir sous un jour neuf près d'un quart de la carrière de Renoir. Il constitue la première publication jamais parue sur ce sujet.
