Synopsis
" Admirable et incroyable ! " C'est par ces mots que Delacroix salua la découverte en France de la peinture de Constable exposée pour la première fois à Paris au Salon de 1824. Delacroix ajoutait : " Ce Constable me fait un grand bien ! ", et la légende dit qu'inspiré par La Charrette à foin, il retoucha aussitôt les fonds des Massacres de Scio. À sa suite, le public comme la critique firent un accueil enthousiaste à cette nouvelle peinture anglaise, qui révolutionnait l'art du paysage et préparait la voie à l'école de Barbizon et à l'Impressionnisme. Tout en faisant connaître des aspects plus secrets de son œuvre, comme les portraits, l'ouvrage se propose d'éclairer l'influence déterminante de Constable sur la peinture européenne. Les œuvres ont été sélectionnées par Lucian Freud, qui, dans une interview au début de l'ouvrage, place Constable parmi les grands précurseurs de la peinture contemporaine, et rend hommage au caractère direct et authentique de son langage pictural.
