" Sous son titre sage et méthodique mais dont on saisit vite l'ambivalence, L'Emploi du temps est d'abord un roman policier, bâti, selon la définition qu'en donne l'auteur, "sur deux meurtres dont le premier, commis par l'assassin, n'est que l'occasion du second, dans lequel il est la victime du meurtrier pur et impunissable, du détective qui le met à mort. . ". . Par un raffinement supplémentaire, c'est également un roman policier, intitulé de façon ambiguë et analogique Le Meurtre de Bleston, qui servira de guide à Revel au long de son enquête. A l'aide de cette clé il va essayer toutes les serrures, découvrir des repères. Sa tâche est celle du détective qui ouvre ses dossiers, suit sa piste, consigne, dépose et, par une entière connaissance des faits et causes, s'efforce de reconstituer "l'accident"".
