Cet ouvrage reconstruit la conception politique de Malebranche en dégageant de ses textes une autre déclinaison possible de la théorie politique à l'époque moderne, qui vient s'intégrer dans une anthropologie se caractérisant par un examen critique et généalogique des rapports de pouvoir. Il met au jour ces éléments conceptuels servant de charnière entre les thèses fondamentales de la pensée de l'oratorien et sa vision politique. C'est dans une telle perspective que cette étude a pu saisir chez Malebranche un « occasionnalisme politique », en démontrant que l'institution de la civitas peut être comprise à la lueur de la conception de l'unicausalité divine et de la théorie occasionnaliste des rapports entre l'âme et le corps.
