In 1919, at the time of original publication of An Enquiry Concerning the Principles of Natural Knowledge, it was universally recognized that the ultimate concepts of physics required reinterpretation. The task was undertaken by Alfred North Whitehead, the prominent English mathematician and philosopher who co-authored the highly influential Principia Mathematica with Bertrand Russell. And it was a piece of great good fortune that such a task should be undertaken by a thinker who was not only one of the foremost of living mathematicians, but also a metaphysician who clearly saw the wider issues involved.
