Joseph Vaughan, écrivain à succès, tient en joue un tueur en série, dans l'ombre duquel il vit depuis bientôt trente ans. Joseph a douze ans lorsqu'il découvre dans son village de Géorgie le corps horriblement mutilé d'une fillette assassinée. La première victime d'une longue série qui laissera longtemps la police impuissante. Des années plus tard, lorsque l'affaire semble enfin élucidée, Joseph décide de changer de vie et de s'installer à New York pour oublier les séquelles de cette histoire qui l'a touché de trop près. Lorsqu'il comprend que le tueur est toujours à l'œuvre, il n'a d'autre solution pour échapper à ses démons, alors que les cadavres d'enfants se multiplient, que de reprendre une enquête qui le hante afin de démasquer le vrai coupable, dont l'identité ne sera révélée que dans les toutes dernières pages.
Plus encore qu'un roman de serial killer à la mécanique parfaite et au suspense constant, Seul le silence marque une date dans l'histoire du thriller. Avec ce récit crépusculaire à la noirceur absolue, sans concession aucune, R. J.Ellory évoque autant William Styron que Norman Mailer par la puissance de son écriture et la complexité des émotions qu'il met en jeu.
