Synopsis
Après un naufrage, Humphrey Van Weyden, un gentleman fluet, est recueilli puis enrôlé de force comme mousse par Loup Larsen, un terrifiant capitaine de goélette, buveur, violent mais très cultivé. Ce capitaine, athée, éprouve peu à peu une sorte d'estime teintée de mépris pour Humphrey, à l'inverse, très religieux : " si vous savez que quand vous mourrez, vous irez dans un monde meilleur, alors, pourquoi avez-vous peur de mourir ? " Ainsi naissent les premières joutes verbales - pleines d'humour et d'esprit - qui rythment ce passionnant récit d'aventure, et qui redoubleront à l'arrivée d'une jeune femme, un futur enjeu pour ces deux hommes.
