Synopsis
Après les succès des "Jours fragiles", d'"Un garçon d'Italie" et de "L'Arrière-saison", fidèle au rendez-vous, Philippe Besson confirme avec ce sixième roman l'étendue de son talent. L'histoire commence là, en Cornouailles, dans une ville de bord de mer, en automne. Un homme revient, et avec lui, c'est le passé qui ressurgit. Des années plus tôt, Thomas Sheppard est parti en mer en emmenant son fils alors qu'un avis de tempête avait été lancé. Lorsqu'il est rentré au port, le petit garçon n'était plus avec lui. Dès lors, il s'est retrouvé accusé de la mort de son enfant (dont le corps n'a jamais été retrouvé) et a été incarcéré pendant plusieurs années. Seule l'épreuve du retour sur le lieu de la disparition pourra lui offrir la renaissance. Philippe Besson explore ici le chemin étonnant des sentiments humains pour faire surgir, par miracle, la tendresse au sein d'un paysage austère et rude, aussi aride que le coeur de ceux qui l'habitent. Les romans de Philippe Besson font tous l'objet d'une adaptation : pour le cinéma, "Son frère" a été mis en scène par Patrice Chéreau, avec Bruno Todeschini et Eric Caravaca, et a reçu en 2003 l'Ours d'argent au Festival de Berlin ; François Dupeyron ("La Chambre des officiers") a écrit et s'apprête à tourner une adaptation des "Jours fragiles", avec Julie et Guillaume Depardieu dans les rôles d'Isabelle et Arthur Rimbaud ; "Un garçon d'Italie" sera porté au cinéma par Philippe Calvario et "En l'absence des hommes" par Etienne Faure, en 2006. Une pièce de théâtre tirée de "L'Arrière-saison" a été créée sur France Culture et sera prochainement montée à Paris.
