Synopsis
A Noël 1993, un vieil homme erre dans Rodez, où il demande, avec une humilité empreinte de noblesse, un peu de pain et de soupe. Lorsqu'on lui demande qui il est, il répond : Je suis Benoît. Près de six siècles plus tôt, le concile de Constance a mis fin au grand schisme d'Occident en déposant le dernier antipape avignonnais, Benoît XIII. Pourtant cette lignée de papes rebelles ne s'est pas éteinte. Simplement, sa trace s'est perdue. Et voilà que les services secrets du Vatican lancent leurs meilleurs agents sur la piste du mendiant de Rodez, qui porte dans sa besace l'anneau du pêcheur, emblème de cette Eglise de l'ombre... Mêlant le récit historique au thriller moderne, Jean Raspail nous conte dans un style inspiré, autour d'un personnage bouleversant d'humanité et de grandeur, le conflit éternel de la fidélité et de l'oubli, de la Foi toujours sommée de se soumettre au monde. About the Author
Né en 1925, Jean Raspail parcourt le monde pendant vingt ans avant de se lancer dans l’écriture. En 1973, il publie Le Camp des saints, qui sera suivi de nombreux romans. Il a reçu en 1981 le Grand Prix du roman de l’Académie française pour Moi, Antoine de Tounens.
