Synopsis
" Après La Bataille, après il neigeait, voici le troisième volet de ma fin d'Empire. Je vous emmène cette fois en 1814. L'Europe envahit la France. Paris est assiégée et ses habitants voient apparaître des Cosaques entre les moulins de Montmartre. Replié à Fontainebleau, abandonné par ses maréchaux, Napoléon est bientôt obligé d'abdiquer. Il déprime, il cherche à se tuer, il se résout enfin à l'exil. Il traverse dangereusement la Provence et s'embarque sur un navire anglais pour son nouveau royaume, l'île d'Elbe, un rocher au large de la Toscane. Comment un homme qui a gouverné un continent va-t-il supporter de régenter une sous-préfecture ? Les quelques fidèles qui l'accompagnent ne brillent guère. Il est entouré d'espions et d'assassins, on vient le visiter de l'Europe entière comme un animal de zoo. Pour la première fois, et la seule de son existence, nous voyons l'Empereur de près. En France, ses anciens soldats se sentent humiliés par la monarchie revenue. Le soir, dans les casernes, ils trinquent à l'Absent. " P R.

About the Author
Né à Paris en 1946, journaliste cofondateur d’Actuel, Patrick Rambaud a publié une quarantaine de livres, notamment des parodies littéraires qui ont connu un grand succès. Il a obtenu le Grand Prix du roman de l’Académie française et le prix Goncourt en 1997 pour La Bataille. Il est depuis 2008 membre de l’académie Goncourt.
