Synopsis
René Descartes (1596-1650) peut être considéré comme le philosophe dont l'œuvre a fait définitivement basculer dans la modernité, en plaçant au principe de toute connaissance vraie le sujet pensant. A ce titre, son importance est majeure, son influence sur la postérité incalculable. Le Discours de la méthode (1637), écrit en français, a été le premier ouvrage publié par Descartes ; autobiographie intellectuelle et texte programme, il condense l'essentiel du message philosophique de son auteur. Sur un ton direct et sans fard, qui contribue à la force attractive du Discours, Descartes invite à méditer son propre parcours intellectuel, guidé par la recherche la plus radicale de vérité. Prenant appui sur quatre règles de la méthode, il expose, après avoir réservé le cas de la morale (dite " par provision "), la découverte décisive du " Je pense, donc je suis ", dont la clarté et la distinction deviennent critères de tout ce qui peut être connu. Il nous achemine alors vers la pensée de Dieu et de l'âme, des sciences et de leurs principes, du monde et des corps.

About the Author
Ren? Descartes, known as the Father of Modern Philosophy and inventor of Cartesian coordinates, was a seventeenth century French philosopher, mathematician, and writer. Descartes made significant contributions to the fields of philosophy and mathematics, and was a proponent of rationalism, believing strongly in fact and deductive reasoning. Working in both French and Latin, he wrote many mathematical and philosophical works including The World, Discourse on a Method, Meditations on First Philosophy, and Passions of the Soul. He is perhaps best known for originating the statement I think, therefore I am.
