Synopsis
De sa mission d'inspection des monuments historiques en Corse, Mérimée rapporta de précieuses notes de voyage. Mais l'archéologue avouait son impuissance à exprimer le mystère de l'âme corse. Au romancier de prendre le relais : mieux que le traité savant dont elle tirait sa substance, la fiction savait recréer une Corse éternelle dans toute sa vérité, évitant avec ironie les lieux communs trop abondants d'une couleur locale à l'usage des touristes. Sous le regard de bandits, de bergers et d'une belle Irlandaise, Orso, en héros tragique, est déchiré entre le respect de la justice et la nécessité de la vendetta, soumis aux forces archaïques que déchaîne, telle une moderne Electre, sa sœur, la belle Colomba, jeteuse de sorts et voceratrice sublime.

Né en 1803 à Paris, Prosper Mérimée est un écrivain français qui s’est particulièrement illustré dans le genre de la nouvelle. Élu à l’Académie française en 1844, il est notamment l’auteur de La Vénus d’Ille, Colomba, Mateo Falcone ou encore de Carmen.
