Synopsis
En 1903 à Ropraz, dans le Haut-Jorat vaudois, la fille du juge de paix meurt à vingt ans d'une méningite. Un matin, on trouve le couvercle du cercueil soulevé, le corps de la virginale Rosa profané, les membres en partie dévorés. Horreur. Stupéfaction des villages alentour, retour des superstitions, hantise du vampirisme, chacun épiant l'autre au cœur de l'hiver. Puis, à Carrouge et à Ferlens, deux autres profanations sont commises. Il faut désormais un coupable. Ce sera le nommé Favez, un garçon de ferme aux yeux rougis, qu'on a surpris à l'étable. Condamné, emprisonné, soumis à la psychiatrie, on perd sa trace en 1915. A partir d'un fait réel, Jacques Chessex donne le roman de la fascination- meurtrière. Qui mieux que lui sait dire la " crasse primitive ", la solitude, les fantasmes des notables, la mauvaise conscience d'une époque ?
