Synopsis
1995-2000 : cinq ans dans la vie de Sarah et de Salim, tous deux chargés de la lutte antiterroriste dans la ville d'Alger. Esthètes et flics, attirés par l'abîme, ils sont confrontés à l'horreur des attentats, au chaos sentimental de la passion amoureuse et au vertige de leurs propres pulsions. Ils savent qui sont les auteurs du carnage dont Ali a miraculeusement réchappé. Ce sont les mêmes qui sont venus chercher, dans sa classe, une fillette de onze ans qu'ils ont battue, violée, énucléée puis égorgée... Mais personne ne parle, ni ne dénonce : ce serait risquer la mort. Les assassins vont jusqu'à se montrer aux funérailles du gamin abattu sous le préau de l'école alors qu'il lavait l'éponge du tableau noir. Ce roman est une radioscopie de la folie qui habite les tueurs, comme s'ils portaient en eux une souillure, et qu'ils éprouvaient le besoin de la plaquer sur leurs victimes pour être un peu moins seuls, un peu plus humains.
