Ce roman, Balzac fait semblant d'y travailler, il y pense, il visite les lieux, rencontre des témoins, prend des notes. Il l'annonce dans une longue lettre à Madame Hanska mais, bousculé par mille projets, il ne nous donnera jamais ce livre qui l'obsède. Pourquoi Balzac voulait-il raconter Essling ? Pourquoi nous emmener aux portes de Vienne en 1809 avec Napoléon ? Pourquoi pas Marengo, Aboukir, Austerlitz ou Wagram ? Pourquoi ces deux journées féroces où personne n'a envie de se battre, qui laissent quarante mille morts dans les blés ? Pour le comprendre, je ne voyais qu'une solution : franchir à mon tour le Danube, chevaucher avec Lannes et Masséna, sentir la chaleur des incendies, risquer les boulets autrichiens. Ce fut d'abord une interrogation, puis une curiosité, ensuite une envie, enfin une nécessité. A cheval !
