Synopsis
Nous sommes en 1920. A la gare de l'Est, un jeune homme prend l'Orient-Express vers Vienne et Budapest. Plus qu'un simple voyage, ce départ est pour lui une "véritable entrée dans la vie". Agé de vingt-trois ans, Jean Mistler abandonne la carrière universitaire qui semblait l'attendre en France pour se jeter dans l'inconnu. Envoyé en Hongrie comme professeur, il est bientôt nommé attaché culturel à la Légation de France à Budapest. Soixante ans plus tard, l'auteur se rappelle ces années-charnières où son existence prit une autre direction ; il assistera à la fin d'une époque, à l'écroulement de la plus vieille monarchie d'Europe, celle des Habsbourg. Dans un style d'une précision et d'une clarté éblouissantes, son témoignage est celui d'un homme qui a vu naître un monde nouveau au moment précis où lui-même s'éveillait au monde.
