Synopsis
Partie sur les traces de son histoire familiale, une jeune femme poursuit le souvenir d'un condamné à mort: un garçon de 24 ans embarqué dans un braquage suicidaire en 1954. La postérité a retenu qu'il avait retrouvé la foi en prison. La justice en a fait un monstre, l'église a voulu en faire un saint. Qui était-il ? Que cherchait-il ? Ce garçon s'appelait Jacques Fesch, c'est l'oncle de la narratrice. Un oncle fantasmé qu'elle n'a jamais connu et dont la légende la hante. Alors qu'elle plonge dans les années 1950, tentant de comprendre le parcours de cet homme insaisissable, ses questions virent à l'obsession et font resurgir des chagrins enfouis.
Comme un frère est l'histoire d'un fantasme et d'une quète. Un road movie intime. C'est l'histoire d'un frère inventé, maudit, l'histoire d'une rencontre impossible.
Stéphanie Polack a publié en 2007 un premier roman remarqué, Route royale, où elle faisait entendre sa voix singulière. C'est cette mème voix, cette mème énergie, cette mème âpreté que l'on retrouve dans Comme un frère, qui confirme son talent.
