Synopsis
On a souvent répété que l'expérience concentrationnaire était indicible. Et pourtant de très nombreux textes, œuvres ou films s'efforcent d'en témoigner en cherchant le langage et les images capables d'approcher ce qui est au-delà de l'imaginable. A partir d'un vaste corpus littéraire et cinématographique, Philippe Mesnard étudie les différentes formes d'expression mobilisées par les témoins, écrivains et artistes. Il distingue ainsi quatre configurations testimoniales : l'écriture réaliste supposée transparente (chez Vassili Grossman, David Rousset et d'autres), l'écriture " transcendante " qui transpose la réalité sur une scène symbolique (comme dans Le Dernier des Justes d'André Schwartz-Bart ou La Vie est belle de Roberto Benigni), la " configuration critique " ménageant la place du vide et de la perte (par exemple chez Imre Kertész, Robert Antelme ou Claude Lanzmann) ou encore l'écriture " pathique ", émotionnelle, bousculant le récit pour en faire surgir la violence extrême. Ces écritures varient selon les auteurs, les moments et les contextes de leur production, chacune ajuste, entre distance et proximité, son rapport à al catastrophe. Mais toutes utilisent les ressources de la culture contre ce qui, détruisant l'homme, la détruisait aussi. Telle est la résistance polyphonique du témoignage dont Philippe Mesnard donne ici une analyse originale, ample et synthétique qui fera référence.

About the Author
Philippe Mesnard est aître de conférence en littérature. Il enseigne à la Haute Ecole de Bruxelles (ISTI) et à l'université de Marne-la-Vallée. Il est également directeur de programme au Collège international ,de philosophie. Auteur, entre autres, de Maurice Blanchot, le sujet de l'engagement (1996), Conscience de la Shoah (2000), Giorgio Agamben à l'épreuve d'Auschwitz (2001), La Victime écran, la représentation humanitaire en question (2002), il a également édité deux inédits de Primo Levi ainsi que les manuscrits des Sonderkommandos d'Auschwitz.

He distinguishes four principal forms of testimony: realist writing - a supposedly transparent form of expression (Vassili Grossman, David Rousset amongst others); 'transcendent' writing, that transposes reality onto a symbolic scene (as in Le dernier des Justes by André Schwartz-Bart or La vita e bella by Roberto Benigni); The 'critical form' that integrates loss and grief in its space (in Imre Kertész, Robert Antelme or Claude Lanzmann's works for example); and 'phatic' writing, that is emotional and unsettles language to express violence. These various forms create a culture of resistance against those who, in destroying man, also destroyed language. Philippe Mesnard offers a cogent, synthetic and thought-provoking analysis of the polyphonic resistance that the act of testifying creates, between distance and proximity.Philippe Mesnard is a lecturer in literature who teaches at the Haute École in Brussels and at the University of Marne-la-Vallée.
