Synopsis
Entre toutes les nations occidentales, la France se singularise par le nombre de ses lois " mémorielles ". Depuis la loi Gayssot, votée en 1990 pour punir le négationnisme, le Parlement a édicté tour à tour des lois relatives au génocide arménien, aux traites négrières transatlantiques, puis à la colonisation. Singulier dispositif législatif, sans précédent, qui transforme des jugements historiographiques en délits ! Dans un but certes louable, les parlementaires ont ouvert ce qui se révèle être une terrible boîte de Pandore. Verra-t-on bientôt les chercheurs choisir leur sujet en fonction de son innocuité ? Comment en est-on venu là ? De quelles complexes transformations de la mémoire nationale est-ce le résultat ? Les démocraties compassionnelles que sont devenues nos sociétés veulent-elles réellement un avenir où la vérité serait proférée par l'Etat ? La communauté des historiens s'est légitimement émue de cette situation. Aussi René Rémond a-t-il pris la tête d'une association réclamant l'abrogation de toutes les lois mémorielles. Toutes ? Il s'en explique ici, en menant une réflexion ouverte sur le métier d'historien, sur la politique identitaire à l'œuvre dans notre pays, sur les rapports de la mémoire et de l'histoire, sur la communauté nationale.
