Synopsis
Abandonné par Mathilde peu après sa naissance, Maxence Auzeral, devenu négociant à Toulouse, découvre le destin insoupçonné de cette mère, morte 50 ans plus tard dans une modeste rue de Bègles. Elle lui laisse l'étonnant héritage d'une dizaine de lingots d'or et l'adresse d'un certain Fédor en Lettonie. À Riga, Maxence va découvrir un vieil homme brisé par le goulag, qui lui raconte ses missions de militant communiste en 36. Et sa rencontre, au cours d'un séjour à Ax-les-Thermes, avec Mathilde, mariée à un homme âgé, leur amour passionné, sa décision de le rejoindre en Espagne aux cotés des brigades internationales et leur séparation forcée après la victoire franquiste. Le récit de Fédor bouleverse Maxence qui saura désormais comment utiliser et distribuer ces lingots, trésor du peuple letton.
