Synopsis
Tout oppose Émilienne et Marthe Rivière, filles d'instituteurs des Pyrénées ariégeoises. L'une austère, l'autre séduisante et enjouée, à l'image du tournant radicalement différent que vont prendre leurs vies. Émilienne suit le parcours tracé par ses parents en devenant enseignante. Marthe, elle, n'obéit qu'à son cœur et à son esprit d'aventure, vivant des amours passionnelles, au mépris de la morale. L'une des deux est peut-être la mère de Jean-René, un enfant naturel en quête de ses origines. Plongeant dans le passé des Rivière, celui-ci ouvre alors les pages d'une histoire insoupçonnée...
