Je ne peins mes tableaux de si riche peinture, Et si hauts arguments ne recherche à mes vers : Mais suivant de ce lieu les accidents divers, Soit de bien, soit de mal, j'escris à l'adventure. Je me plains à mes vers, si j'ay quelque regret, Je me ris avec eulx, je leur dy mon secret, Comme estans de mon cœur les plus seurs secretaires. Aussi ne veulx-je tant les pigner et friser, Et de plus braves noms ne les veulx desguiser, Que de papiers journaulx, ou bien de commentaires.

About the Author
Né à Liré en 1522, étudiant en droit, Joachim Du Bellay se passionne très tôt pour les recherches des humanistes. Il rencontre Ronsard en 1547 et entretient avec lui des relations littéraires écrites. Atteint de surdité en 1550, il passe quatre ans à Rome puis revient à Paris où il meurt subitement au début de 1560.

Le poète des Antiquités - trente-deux sonnets à la mémoire d'une ville morte et de son illustre passé - chante la grandeur de Rome mais aussi sa fureur belliqueuse, son appétit de conquête et sa folie guerrière qui l'ont conduite à sa perte. Dans les Regrets, longue plainte composée de cent quatre-vingt-onze sonnets, Du Bellay avoue sa déception face à la Rome moderne, qui étale ses laideurs avec cynisme. Dérivant sans cesse vers le passé, le poète de la Pléiade éprouve l'inconsistance du réel et le pouvoir dévastateur du temps.
