Synopsis
La Lettre à d'Alembert est une réponse à l'article " Genève " qui venait de paraître dans l'Encyclopédie. D'Alembert, dans cet article, exprimait le souhait qu'on établisse un théâtre à Genève et qu'on mette fin à la polémique étroite menée par les théologiens contre la comédie. On a eu trop longtemps l'habitude de considérer la Lettre à d'Alembert comme une critique du théâtre classique et une prolongation de la querelle des prêtres contre le théâtre. Rousseau ne se prononce pas ici contre toute espèce de spectacle ; il ne s'oppose qu'à l'installation à Genève d'un théâtre aristocratique, bon seulement pour Paris, ville dépravée par l'oisiveté et l'amour du plaisir. Il pense que les spectacles sont faits pour le peuple, qu'on doit favoriser un théâtre qui donnerait des leçons agréables et utiles pour toutes les conditions et désapprouver les spectacles qui entretiennent la vanité, la fainéantise, le luxe, l'impudicité. " Il ne s'agit plus ici d'un vain babil de philosophie ; mais d'une vérité de pratique importante à tout un peuple. "
