Synopsis
Quel crime a commis Agnès pour ressentir aujourd'hui l'impérieux besoin de se confier ? Cette jeune catholique pratiquante était pourtant parvenue à rendre sa vie conforme à son rêve de petite fille et au scénario souhaité par son milieu : à vingt ans, elle avait rencontré son futur mari au très prisé bal du Triomphe des saint-cyriens, elle avait abandonné sans regret ses études pour le suivre en régiment à Bayonne, où elle avait attendu tranquillement que s'accomplisse sa destinée de mère de famille nombreuse. Engagements, foi, sociabilité : elle avait tout bien fait Mais les années ont passé, et son ventre est resté vide. Cette maternité qui se refuse, en instillant chez Agnès le sentiment de son imperfection et de son inutilité, a provoqué en elle une fissure. Au point de la pousser à commettre ce qui ressemble au pire, à ses yeux comme à ceux de sa communauté. Dans ce roman haletant et glaçant, Romane Lafore met en scène une jeune femme, hantée parle bien et le mal, qui tente de trouver son chemin entre culpabilité et liberté.
