Born in Paris in 1848, Gauguin spent a substantial part of his childhood in Peru before joining the merchant marine in his late teens and traveling around the Southern hemisphere. Isabelle Cahn is an archivist at the Musee d'Orsay in Paris and co-authored Cezanne (Abrams, 1996), as well as books on Renoir; Manet, Maillol, and 19th-century Art in her native France.
