Synopsis
Harpagon est l'une des plus grandes créations de Molière. Tout, dans cet homme, respire l'avarice et la décrépitude. Rongé par une maladie de corps, Harpagon l'est aussi par une maladie de l'âme. Ladre, il rogne sur la nourriture et les habits de ses domestiques, sur l'avoine de ses chevaux, sur l'entretien de son fils, obligé d'emprunter à taux usuraire pour vivre, et sur les cadeaux indispensables à sa fiancée. Usurier, il prête à des taux exorbitants, calcule, évalue tous les objets qui l'entourent. Dans cette atmosphère poussiéreuse et sordide, où fusent les mots féroces, le père usurier s'oppose au fils emprunteur. L'avarice détruit l'amour filial, l'amour paternel, l'amour quel qu'il soit. La cassette remplie d'or enterrée dans le jardin est l'âme, le cour, le souffle même d'Harpagon. Les retrouvailles d'un homme et d'une cassette sont ici le seul hymne à l'amour.
