Synopsis
"Qu'est-ce qu'optimisme ? disait Cacambo. - Hélas! dit Candide, c'est la rage de soutenir que tout est bien quand on est mal". L'œuvre la plus célèbre de Voltaire, un des textes français les plus universellement connus, démontre trois choses : que le monde va mal, et qu'il pourrait aller mieux, si l'on commençait par dire moins de bêtises. En attendant, mieux vaut rire que pleurer, tout en cultivant notre jardin. Candide conjugue la philosophie et le comique.

About the Author
1694 - 1778. Ses débuts dans les lettres (vers contre le Régent) sont aussi le commencement de ses démêlés avec le pouvoir (il sera embastillé). Après un exil de trois ans en Angleterre, dont il vante l'esprit de liberté dans les Lettres philosophiques (1734), il ne cessera plus de chercher la sécurité, à Cirey, chez Mme Du Châtelet, auprès de Frédéric de Prusse (1750 - 1753), puis dans ses domaines des Délices (1755) et de Ferney (1759). Admirateur du XVIIe siècle, il cherche à égaler les écrivains classiques dans l'épopée (la Henriade, 1728) ou la tragédie (Zaïre, 1732). Mais il est surtout pour l'Europe un prince de l'esprit et des idées philosophiques, qu'il diffuse par ses poèmes (Poème sur le désastre de Lisbonne, 1756), ses contes (Zadig, Candide), ses essais historiques (le Siècle de Louis XIV, 1751), son Dictionnaire philosophique (1764) et ses campagnes en faveur des victimes d'erreurs judiciaires (Calas, Sirven, Lally-Tollendal). Idole d'une bourgeoisie libérale anticléricale, il reste un maître du récit vif et spirituel. (Académie française.)
