Synopsis
Avec Amazonia , Patrick Deville propose un somptueux carnaval littéraire dont le principe est une remontée de l'Amazone et la traversée du sous-continent latino-américain, partant de Belém sur l'Atlantique pour aboutir à Santa Elena sur le Pacifique, en ayant franchi la cordillère des Andes. On découvre Santarém, le rio Negro, Manaus, Iquitos, Guayaquil, on finit même aux Galápagos, plausible havre de paix dans un monde devenu à nouveau fou, et qui pousse les feux de son extinction. Le roman remonte jusqu'aux premières intrusions européennes, dans la quête d'or et de richesses, selon une géographie encore vierge, pleine de légendes et de surprises. Plus tard, les explorateurs établiront des cartes, mettront un peu d'ordre dans le labyrinthe de fleuves et affluents. Des industriels viendront exploiter le caoutchouc, faisant fortune et faillite, le monde va vite. Dans ce paysage luxuriant qui porte à la démesure, certains se forgent un destin : Aguirre, Fitzgerald devenu Fitzcarrald, Darwin, Humboldt, Bolívar. Ce voyage entrepris par un père avec son fils de vingt-neuf ans dans l'histoire et le territoire de l'Amazonie est aussi l'occasion d'éprouver le dérèglement du climat et ses conséquences catastrophiques.

Grand voyageur et esprit cosmopolite, Patrick Deville est né en 1957. Il a publié une dizaine de romans, traduits dans de nombreuses langues. Il a été lauréat du Prix Femina pour Peste & Choléra, paru en 2012.
