"La mer nous est indispensable ! Ce que la science nous a appris sur les origines de la mer, sa nature physique, ses mouvements, son rôle dans les changements climatiques, oblige à la regarder comme le coeur d'un système global dont dépend l'équilibre de la planète. Pour lui donner toute sa mesure, nous avons uni nos connaissances et nos regards : l'astrophysicien pour raconter le rôle de la mer dans le Système solaire et dans l'Univers et l'océanographe pour l'observer depuis la Terre, en plongeant dans ses profondeurs extrêmes. Nous allons laisser à nos petits-entants cette planète dans un état précaire ; ils savent qu'ils devront en prendre soin. Aussi souhaitons-nous éveiller leur curiosité. Et qu'ils gardent cette capacité d'émerveillement que nous aimons tant voir briller dans leurs veux"...
