This is the story of Vivian, an immigrant from the Dominican Republic who moved to the United States with her husband in search of a better life for her three children. Jonathan, her husband changes completely on arrival to the U.S. He becomes abusive and completely disregards his wife. When their three children finally join them, they experience what no child should experience; violence before their eyes. They have to bear helplessly watching their mum battered every day. Her situation is worsened by the fact that all her relatives are far off in the Dominican and her controlling husband manipulates them into believing she is the one at fault. She eventually finds her way out after a police woman takes her case up and links her to the right authorities. She gets a restraining order and finally finds peace with her three children in a new place. This book traces the journey domestic abuse victims have to take starting from how they fall into abuse and become victims, the effect of abuse on their children, the role of the police in solving domestic abuse as well as what we can as a society do to help victims of domestic abuse. Let us keep in mind that according to statistics, at least twenty people are abused by an intimate partner in the U.S every minute. We should therefore be involved in bringing an end to this. The book also provides a guide to victims on how they can help themselves get out of their situation, the resources they can utilize, and the channels to follow. Hope this book helps you find your happy place.
