The Snowmaiden of Russian folklore is the daughter of Mother Spring and Father Frost and is sent to childless couples as a winter blessing. She is received with much joy, but as she comes to see the world around her and succumbs to the love of a young man, the warmth of her love causes her to slowly melt away. She is, after all, only a Snowmaiden. The mystery begins late in the reign of Ivan the Terrible. The murder of the young daughter of an elderly couple is investigated by the chief magistrate, Volkov. He finds the old couple inconsolable and seems to be the only one who cares about their loss. Volkov is frustrated by uncaring peers and Church officials but stays vigilant and will not stop until the murderer is found.
