In Riverhold the sun moves just a degree an hour, slowly bringing the long night behind it. Every seven years with darkness comes death as the flessen return. Stalking the nights, they seek the heat and light of their prey to satisfy their hunger. Fire is outlawed. This is known as The Dimming. This Dimming - the 66th - not only brings the flessen, but a deadlier creature, the morgen. A dire combination. Struggling to survive without fire, the people must live in the dim glow of the pale blue light from the glowlings, working to feed themselves and their lords. The battle to prosper by the Law of Holding is not only against the deadly creatures, but against each other and the force of nature itself. For most, following the traditional Law of Holding is enough. But for a few, change must come. They must put an end to the creatures, if only they can survive the Dimming to do it.

Michael R Stute lives in the rain forest of the Cerro Azul Mountains of Panamá in an off-grid home powered only by the sun and wind. Fortunately there are two suns in his life that warm his days. The first is the normal one that travels about fifteen degrees an hour from east to west, disappearing at night. The second, far brighter, more brilliant, fiery as a nova, and just as life-giving is the love of his life, Jena, with whom he lives along with their twin children, four cats, a dog and millions of things that make noise in the night.
