Laboratories not only convey hands-on experience, but provide important knowledge on ethics, lab notebook keeping, and literature review. This lab is intended for upper-division undergraduate, or early graduate students. Four experimental techniques with broad applications are introduced, namely pulsed nuclear magnetic resonance, atomic force microscopy, optical photolithography, and the Arduino micro controller. Each technique is prepended with fundamental physics to provide a solid background. The included experiments include the spin echo measurement for glycerine, atomic force microscopy on optical data storage devices, temperature-dependence of resistivity for Gold thin films, and black body temperature measurements with the Arduino micro controller. The reader is made aware of ethics, lab notebook taking, report writing, and data graphing.
