Rhyming words are for everyone. They make us feel happy, or sad; at times they bring comfort and sometimes pain, but always they are a joy to the soul. The best rhyming words are not the complicated ones full of big words that writhe and snake about as you try to come to terms with their meaning. The very best rhyming words are simple and clean, pure, and sometimes they can cut like a knife. They can make you laugh, they can make you angry, they can say what you feel and often they can tell the world what you are trying to hide – more clearly than you might imagine. Sometimes they can make you cry. There are rhyming words in this book that can do all of these things, in different ways, to different people at different times. It is important that everyone is touched by rhyming words at some point in their life, for a life without them is no life at all. Sometimes they don’t even have to rhyme. Sometimes they just have to be words that say the right thing, to the right person. This is not poetry. We never use the P word, because everyone immediately assumes you’re trying to be clever. The P word is not allowed in this book – we only ever whisper it anyway because it assumes a life of its own if you speak it loudly. It changes its shape and form and meaning, step by arrogant step, until it no longer spells poetry. It spells pretentious instead. I’m not sure what that means, but it doesn’t sound good to me, so here there are only… Rhyming words (or words that don’t even rhyme). It’s all about what the words mean to you. Nobody else can ever see the things you see in exactly the way you see them. It can be the most enlightening and surprising thing to just sit quietly, away from all the noise and interruptions, and just read some rhyming words. Try it. It’s true. No one else needs to know, and I won’t tell them. Promise.
