The Zhouyi (周易), or Book of Changes (I Ching), is among the foundational works of Chinese civilization. Its sixty-four hexagrams have inspired centuries of reflection on change, human conduct, the natural world, and the ordering of society. Yet the Zhouyi was never simply a collection of enigmatic sayings: its intellectual history is inseparable from the generations of scholars who interpreted, debated, and transmitted its words.
The Zhouyi Zhushu (周易注疏) brings together the classical text and its great historical commentaries in a carefully edited Chinese-language edition.
Four complementary layers of the tradition are presented:
These historical commentaries are reproduced rather than replaced with modern paraphrases. Kong Yingda's preface and eight introductory discussions are also included.
A scholarly text designed for actual reading.
Each hexagram begins on a new page, accompanied by its hexagram figure. The classical text, shorter annotations, extended commentaries, pronunciation glosses, and textual notes are distinguished through a carefully organized typographic system. Readers can move between the original passage and its successive interpretations without losing their place.
The text has been newly punctuated or its punctuation reviewed, collated against historical witnesses, and corrected where the evidence warrants.
和谐体 - Harmonized Chinese Orthography
This edition follows Coldscholar's distinctive 和谐体 (Harmonized Chinese Orthography), a consistent approach intended to combine the accessibility of modern simplified Chinese with the distinctions necessary for reading classical literature accurately.
A generous letter-size format.
Printed at US letter size (8.5 × 11 inches; approximately 216 × 279 mm), this edition is designed as a substantial scholarly reading and reference volume rather than a compact pocket book. The larger pages provide room for the classical text, multiple layers of commentary, hexagram figures, and critical apparatus while preserving a clear visual hierarchy.
The format is especially well suited to sustained reading, desk study, teaching, and consultation.
Published by Coldscholar (寒士斋), this edition is intended for students and scholars of classical Chinese, Chinese philosophy, textual history, and the Book of Changes, as well as independent readers wishing to encounter the traditional exegetical literature directly.
This volume contains the original Chinese texts and commentaries, not an English translation.
