Review

What a story "Served in Silence" is. This mans compelling journey of the affects of a life not lived authentically will open your eyes to the genuine struggles our men and women deal with daily. Not only those serving our country but all that are just trying to live "their" life. This book made me chuckle (what a writer) but honestly, brought me to tears. His struggles are so real, what a journey, I'm happy he found himself. Truly touched my heart and it will yours too!
P.S. just received and couldn't put it down!

Powerful! An excellent read!

I was riveted by this coming of age story of a young man growing up in a small community and moving into the wider world. He knew he was different and suffered bullying because of that difference. In the end his differences and drive inspired him to tackle the most difficult tasks and excel at them, including conquering alcoholism. It is a tale to remind all of us to embrace our strengths and authentic selves and seek those who appreciate what we have to offer. Policy that encourages anyone to hide who they are, is policy that stifles and shames, policy that should not be tolerated in a climate of inclusion. Mark David Gibson has bravely shared his story and offered his experience as a lesson to all of us to stay true to ourselves.

Full disclosure: I went to graduate school with Mark. He was always the optimistic, high-achieving, gregarious Officer he describes. But I never knew about the demons he was fighting as a man who was unable to bring his "full self" to work or our school community.

Fast forward ~15 years and I read the entire book in 24 hours. It is an awesome read -- you will laugh and you will cry (maybe both at the same time).

Best of all, the book gave me an opportunity to talk about some important topics with my own young sons. So Mark -- thank you for your service to our nation and thank you for the service you are now doing for LGBT youth and, in fact, for all families.

Everyone, buy this book! And buy another copy for someone you know, who needs a little nudge to Live Authentically!

Are you living your life authentically? Or, are you living life to meet the expectations of others?
Mark is brutally honest in revealing his story and about how he has lived his life.
His commitment to Country, volunteering and his Mother are most impressive.
His decisions and their consequences will make you think about your own decisions in life. I commend Mark on his courage to write this book. Well done!!

A raw, sometimes cringeworthy, candid confession of struggles with authenticity. How a middle class American boy overcame poor parenting to succeed in the military. I would have liked to have learned more about the "rest of the story," but I guess that comes in volume 2. Mark's spirit is a joy to "meet" in the book.
