I've often dreamt of trying to survive on a new planet and pitting myself against nature. My dreams were never this chilling, nor the ending as thrilling. When not dreaming of distant worlds, D. W. Vogel is a veterinarian at Animal Care Centers in Cincinnati. She started writing while undergoing chemotherapy for breast cancer, suddenly realizing that the time to write that novel was no longer "someday."
